But for the life of me, I could not figure out how to make them work.
Early on in my journey, before I’d heard of macros, I did things how most hot-body-hopefuls do:
I spent years on the crash diet hamster wheel, getting average-at-best results out of extreme diets. And inevitably, I’d end up spat out the other side and ready to rebound myself even further back than where I’d started.
This was me, taking my 346th set of “before” pictures, and starting to feel totally hopeless.
But around 2012, I started hearing murmurings of this weird approach where you could…
Eat whatever you wanted to?
(This was in the era of carting around five containers of chicken breast, brown rice and steamed broccoli everywhere you went if you wanted to get in shape.)
And this new diet, championed by very jacked people eating hot pink, sprinkle-laden, The Simpsons-esque glazed donuts, sounded both insane and extremely interesting.
I loved the sound of the flexibility it promised, and freedom to choose what I wanted to eat.
But the reality of it was far less glamorous: constantly logging your meals in an app, scanning the barcodes on your food, managing the numbers of everything that went in your mouth…
It was just too damn complicated.
More: I didn’t know how to make sure it was even working.
And if I’m honest, the fact I wasn’t absolutely hating what I was eating had me convinced it couldn’t be.
Still — to go back to salads and Tupperware?
Nope.
Not on the cards for me.
My eyes had been opened.
I could see that macros could work. I just needed a system for making them simple, and a way of being certain they were working.
So, I got to work.
I ran into wall after wall. Some things worked perfectly, but they were still too complicated. Others were straightforward, but didn’t get the results I wanted.
But eventually, I dialled it in.
I came up with the perfect system. A simple process for turning whatever the hell you like to eat into a menu that gets you jacked — all using macros.
